ForayWeb will set up Google Apps at no charge. If you're not a ForayWeb client and want to do it yourself, here's how:

1. Sign Up. This is not the same as signing up for a gmail or adwords account. Select "Administrator" then enter your domain. Hit Continue (or whatever the button is called...they keep changing it.)
2. Fill out the sign up form that is displayed. Once completed, you will land at the Google Dashboard. At the top of the page will be the title: Google Apps for mybusinessname
3. Now it gets interesting. Right under the main menu bar (where it says "Dashboard") you'll see a little yellow alert triangle with the text "To activate Google Apps services you must verify that you own your domain". Click the link that says Verify Domain Ownership
4. You'll be given the choice of 2 methods of domain verification: (1) uploading a special file to your webspace or (2) modifying your domain's DNS record. Which should you choose?
   • If you have a website for this domain, then option #1 is what you want to do.
   • Option #2 is needed if you want to send mail to a domain that isn't associated with a website. If you need to verify via option #2 and don't know how to modify DNS records, then you will need to get your domain administrator or a suitably geeky friend to do it for you.
5. For the sake of this tutorial, let's assume you've chosen option #1 -- Upload an HTML file. You'll be instructed to create a file with a specific filename and given a line of text to copy into that file. Upload this little guy to your web root (ie, the location where your index.html or index.php file is located) and click Verify. Google will take you back to your admin dashboard and there will be a notification at the top of the page telling you that Google is verifying your upload and that it could take up to 48 hours for this to complete. In practice, it probably won't take that long. The client email that I'm deploying as I write this guide was verified within 2 hours.
6. Once the verification is complete you can set up your email by following these directions.
