Combining Gmail and Google Apps email

If you already use a Gmail account to manage your personal email, you can use that same account to read and send  Google Apps email. This article will give you stepwise instructions for getting it set up. Remember though, that you will still need to log into your Google Apps account to manage your collaborative documents and other group activities.

  1. From your Google Apps email account:
    • Go to Settings > Forwarding and POP/IMAP
    • In the Forwarding section, select "Forward a copy of incoming mail.."
    • Enter your gmail email address in the box next to the Forward option.
    • Choose to keep mail in the inbox or archive it in the drop down box.
    • Hit Save Changes
    • Alternative:
      • Instead of Forwarding, you can enable POP or SMTP. These options give you more control over how and where your mail gets forwarded.
  2. Go to your personal Gmail account:
    • Settings > Accounts
    • Send mail as: Add another email address you own
    • Follow the directions for verifying your ownership of the account.
    • Alternative (if using POP or SMTP)
      • Instead of "Send mail as:" in the Accounts area, select "Get mail from other accounts: Add a mail account you own"
      • A window will come up asking for an email address. Enter the Google Apps email address that you want to manage. Click Next.
      • To keep a copy of each message Gmail retrieves in your Google Apps mail account, select the Leave a copy of retrieved messages on the server checkbox when it's displayed.

That's it. Now you only need to access one Google account for your day to day email handling.
